About San Mateo Residents Directory

No single volume now lists everyone who lives in San Mateo. The useful parts of a residents directory are spread across parcel maps, election-access rules, recorded-document indexes, city records, and the library's historical shelves. This site explains how those pieces fit together, so a name, street, or older address can lead you to the custodian, index, or collection most likely to help.

Why This San Mateo Reference Exists

San Mateo's printed directory trail remains especially useful in the California Collection at the San Mateo Public Library. Polk, Haines, and other city directories cover 1907 to the present and can be searched in print by personal name, business, or street address. The collection is at 55 W. Third Avenue; reference staff can be reached at (650) 522-7818 or smplref@plsinfo.org. For present-day address research, ACRE's Assessor maps begin with an address or APN, while the Recorder's Grantor-Grantee Index is an index-only starting point with no document images online. The City Clerk handles city public-record requests, and the Superior Court holds civil, criminal, family, probate, small-claims, and divorce matters. We bring those sources, limits, and access routes together for San Mateo.

What This Directory Covers

  • Pages by angle: the street directory for address-keyed records, the directory book for historical collections, and the resident lookup for one-person searches
  • San Mateo custodians: the City Clerk, ACRE Recorder, Clerk, Assessor and Elections divisions, the Superior Court, and the Public Library California Collection
  • Research paths: ways to read a directory entry, follow an address through time, and compare a parcel or court index with the record held by its custodian
  • California access rules: the California Public Records Act, Government Code ยงยง7920.000-7931.000, normally calls for a determination within 10 calendar days, with a possible 14-calendar-day extension for unusual circumstances

Where This San Mateo Directory Stops

This is a privately run reference site with no connection to the City of San Mateo, San Mateo County, a California agency, court, or library. Some limits matter:

  • We cannot verify that a particular person currently lives in San Mateo
  • We cannot retrieve, certify, or alter a record for you
  • We cannot place a person on, or remove a person from, any roll or database
  • We cannot advise you on the law or resolve a record dispute
  • We cannot guarantee that every coverage year, link, or office detail remains current

Only the custodian can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, housing, insurance, tenant screening, or any other FCRA-regulated decision.
